Фильм "Дом" – это история четырех поколений семьи русских американцев, потомков знаменитого княжеского рода Голицыных. Когда-то покинув Россию, они оказались во Франции, затем – в Америке. Вот уже более двух десятков лет они живут на Аляске. Бывшая русская земля непостижимым образом связывает их если не с родиной, то с Отчизной, где никто из них никогда не был.
В своих скитаниях эта большая семья сохранила не материальные ценности, а благородство и достоинство – тот фундамент, на котором построен их Дом.
Глава семьи – 94-летняя княжна Прасковья Николаевна.
Home is the story of four generations of a family of Russian Americans, descendants of the Golitsyns, a distinguished princely family. After fleeing Russia, they made their way to France, and from there to the United States. For more than two decades now they have lived in Alaska. This former Russian territory in some mysterious way provides a link if not to their native country, then to their Fatherland, which none of them has ever seen.
In its wanderings this large family has not preserved material treasures, but rather their nobility and dignity—the foundation upon with their Home was built.
The head of the family is ninety-four-year-old Princess Praskovya Nikolayevna.
Острый ум, ясный взгляд на жизнь, юмор и обаяние княжны делают ее главной героиней картины. Ее воспоминания проиллюстрированы с помощью огромного и чудом сохранившегося семейного видео- и фотоархива. Пока мы путешествуем во времени вместе с Прасковьей Николаевной, один из ее внуков, Майкл (Миша), совершает путешествие в пространстве: задумав написать книгу о своей семье, он отправляется к ее истокам.
The Princess’s quick mind, clear-eyed outlook on life, sense of humor and charm make her the main heroine of the film. Her reminiscences are illustrated with footage from the large family archive of videos and photographs that miraculously survived. As we travel in time with Praskovya Nikolayevna, Michael (Misha), one of her grandchildren sets out on a physical journey: he has decided to write a book about his family and travels to France to seek for himself the family’s origins.

He learns that after the civil war in Russia Praskoya Nikolayevna’s father ended up in France.
В Нормандии Миша находит дом, где провела детство его бабушка, княжна Паша, в Париже – квартиру, где после войны его родные прятали бывшего пленного, советского офицера.
Вместе с Мишей мы узнаем об истории любви его бабушки и деда – княжны и бывшего беспризорника, мелкого воришки.
In Normandy Misha finds the house in which his Grandmother Pasha spent her childhood, and in Paris he discovers the apartment where members of his family hid a former prisoner of war, a Soviet officer.
Together with Misha we learn the story of the love affair of his grandmother and grandfather—a princess and a formerly homeless boy, a petty thief.
Есть в картине и еще одна история любви – дочери Прасковьи Николаевны, Кэтрин (Кати), матери Майкла.
There is one other love story in the film—that of Praskovya Nikolayevna’s daughter, Catherine (Katya), Michael’s mother.
Но не счастливая, а драматичная, вынудившая эту семью долгие годы прятаться от властей, жить под чужими именами, бежать в самые глухие, мало приспособленные для жизни, места. Так они оказались на Аляске, с ее суровым климатом, с бытом, лишенным практически всех благ цивилизации. Им нужно было выживать – и они выжили.
Эти потомки рода Голицыных не боятся тяжелого физического труда, обладают необходимой сноровкой для рыбалки и охоты, бережно относятся к природе и умеют пользоваться ее дарами. Но главное их умение – уважать и беречь ближнего, сохранять верность своим нравственным принципам, защищать свой дом: и этот, большой, деревянный, на берегу реки Матануска, которую русские когда-то назвали Медной, и тот, который каждый из них хранит в своем сердце.
But it is dramatic rather than happy, as the family for many years was forced to hide from the authorities, live under assumed names, and flee to the most remote places. That’s how they ended up in Alaska, with its severe climate, living without even the most basic of civilization’s benefits. They needed to survive—and they did.
These heirs of the Golitsyn family do not fear punishing physical labor; they possess the requisite skills for hunting and fishing and treat nature with care and know how to make use of its gifts. But their main skill is respecting and protecting their neighbor, remaining faithful to their moral tenets, and protecting their home: both this large, wooden one on the banks of the Matanuska River, and the home that each one of them keeps in their heart.

Никаких дорог здесь нет, кругом тайга. Все передвижения люди планируют в зависимости от одной дороги – Енисея. И все свои дела и заботы связывают только с погодой и состоянием реки. Путь на другой берег Енисея, Бахтинцы называют просто - ЧЕРЕЗ. Пока дорога ЧЕРЕЗ открыта, охотники должны многое успеть сделать для будущего охотничьего сезона.

There are no roads around here, just the taiga all over the place. Local residents plan all their movements on the basis of one road which is the Yenisei river. All elements of their lives hinge only on the weather, and the condition of the river, While the road across the river is still open, trappers need to complete a lot in preparation for next year’s hunting season.

In the early summer the water level in the Yenisei and its tributaries is still not normal. Trappers take advantage of that and head for the taiga to inspect their properties while the timber is drying on the bank. Later, when the water level falls, it will be much more difficult to reach their trapping areas.

Сборы и отъезд на промысел – дело хлопотное. Готовятся к этому дню охотники заранее, составляя список всего, что нужно, еще с лета. Помимо техники и горючего - это масса вещей, необходимых для работы и длительной жизни в тайге. Такая мелочь, как отсутствие пассатижей или куска проволоки на промысле может обернуться трагедией.

Preparing and leaving for the taiga involves a lot of chores. Hunters prepare for that day in advance making the list of things to take along with them. In addition to equipment and fuel these include a lot of objects that are indispensable for those staying in the taiga for a long time. Forgetting pliers or a piece of wire may turn out to be a tragedy.

Почти полгода здесь стоит такая стужа, что любое, даже самое простое дело становится тяжкой, зачастую опасной работой. В этом постоянном преодолении трудностей и закалился северный человек. Его нельзя ни удивить, ни испугать. Он спокойно смотрит на все.

For almost half the year the cold is so hard that even the simplest chores become difficult and often dangerous. The northern man’s character was steeled through constantly having to overcome adversity. There is nothing that can surprise or frighten him. He takes everything calmly.
